Jeff Cooper's Commentaries

Previously Gunsite Gossip

All .html files are checked for HTML-compliance (HTML 4.01 Transitional, intended for "quirks mode" however use of Netscape 4.x is deprecated) using HTML Tidy from W3.org.

The mark-up scheme was redesigned in order to be Gecko-friendly in May 2002 to celebrate the release of Mozilla 1.0. Any lingering deprecated tags in the mark-up are there (mostly) to accommodate Lynx.

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) Site Summary, sometimes called "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary" and generally termed "RSS," is produced as the file jeff.rdf. This file is in the first, and most simple, RDF schema RSS 0.9. This feed has been tested and found to work with My.Yahoo.com, Reader.Google.com, Bloglines.com and the Firefox browser (with auto-discovery).

Valid HTML 4.01!   Valid CSS!   Valid RSS!

All .pdf files are generated using HTMLDOC Version 1.8.16 Copyright 1997-2001 Easy Software Products.

The the non-frames version of the website still matches the original format and almost the look (with Gecko and Opera you can turn off styles for the full retro effect) as when Johnny first developed it for the web to be viewed in Mosaic or Cello.

It is possible to link directly to a specific block of text, as delimited by horizontal ruled lines, in a "Commentary." Each block has an "id" tag of the form idn, where n is an integer. Do "view source" and all should become clear to those who speak HTML.

Approved (i.e. checked by Johnny) browsers are: Mozilla 1.7.13, Firefox 1.5.0.3, Opera 8.5, Konqueror 3.4.2 (standing in for Safari), Lynx 2.8.5, Links 2.1, Dillo 0.8.5 and, last and least, Internet Explorer 6.0. Versions subsequent to those listed should be fine.

Disclaimer:

These documents are unexpurgated and edited only to eliminate obvious (unambiguous) typographical, spelling and grammatical errors and make them suitable for web display. Latterly (as of mid year 2000) they were prepared from a word processor file originating from Jeff's secretarial service. Emphasis and italics are based on that file, however "Commentaries" may inherit some formatting conventions from predecessors (due to these having been coded into the scripts used to mark-up the files).
